Weekly Updates
At last week’s meeting, Sunrisers heard that Matthieu Bonin is on a mission.
The Sudbury man is planning to swim the circumference of the world's largest fresh-water island this summer.
Bonin left his job to make the 350-kilometre trek around Manitoulin and is currently using his free time to train. He wants to do this in memory of his Aunt Claire who passed away from multiple sclerosis.
Bonin said he can't control how far he gets each day -- that will depend in large part on the current -- but he'll try for at least 8-10 hours.

Bonin isn't new to open-water swimming or large challenges. Last summer he swam across 20 lakes in a fundraiser he called 'Around the World for Camp Quality.'
He also swam across Lake Wahnapitae for our very own Kris’s son Evvy and raised $12,500 for NEO Kids.

imageSharon and I are home safe and sound from our Rotary service trip to the Dominican Republic last week. This was the 18th mission of HHART (Hispaniola Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Team) over the past 10 years.

The team’s primary mission is to improve the lives of poor and disadvantaged people (primarily of Haitian heritage) living near Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, by providing much needed medical, dental and other forms of humanitarian assistance. The team returns to the same communities every mission and has formed strong relationships and trust with the local  people.image

A large project to establish a new dental clinic in one of the villages was completed during our mission.  All the equipment was funded by a global Rotary grant and will start operation next week. The ribbon cutting ceremony included members of the Rotary Club of Sosua and the District Governor from D4060.

We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to participate in this mission.  It was a humbling experience and a reminder to appreciate how fortunate we are to have been born where we were and to lead such privileged lives.  These people have so very little but are content, welcoming, have a strong sense of family and community and sincerely appreciate our efforts.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD

Rotary International offers numerous awards to recognize the generous donations of time and money of individual Rotarians, Rotary clubs, Rotaractors and non-Rotarians. These prestigious awards are for those who demonstrate their commitment to helping others by volunteering their time and talents.

One such award is the SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD which is considered the highest honor that Rotary International can bestow on a member. To demonstrate how prestigious this award is, the SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD recognizes up to 150 outstanding Rotarians and Rotaractors each year whose service activities make an impact on humanity. Only one recipient can be nominated from any given District each year, therefore, there is a potential of 535 nominees each year. Of which a maximum of 150 receive the award.

To be eligible, nominees must have demonstrated exemplary continuing humanitarian service. Emphasis is placed on personal volunteer efforts and active involvement in helping others through Rotary, rather than one’s performance in an elected or appointed Rotary assignment. Past recipients of the award from our District include, PDGs Dawn Straka, Don Watkins and Brian Menton.

As District Governor, I received nominees for a number of worthy recipients from around our District one of those nominees was Steve Wallace.  Steve has been involved in numerous volunteer and leadership positions outside of Rotary. It is my pleasure to inform you that, Steven Wallace, has been selected by the Rotary International’s Board of Directors to receive the 2021-22 SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD.
