At last week’s virtual meeting, Clare Foladore, HSEC Manager at Vale, provided Sunrisers with a vocational talk on diversity in mining.
Clare described how diversity in mining and in particular women in mining while having improved, was still an issue and how having allies in the workforce allowed her to move forward in her career.
Clare defined diversity and explained what was meant by privilege as rights or privileges given to one group and not another.
She also provided metrics on race and gender diversity in mining today and detailed how a workplace benefits from having different perspectives.
District Governor Elect (DGE) Richard Denton and myself have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming Rotary Weekend and President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) to be held on April 8 to 10, 2022 at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre, 700 Lakeshore Drive in North Bay.
At this time, our plan is to hold Rotary Weekend/PETS in person, but we recognize that this may change in order to protect the health and safety of our participants.
As a reminder, President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) is mandatory for all Presidents Elect. We also encourage Presidents Nominee, Secretaries, Treasurers and Club Directors to attend. Rotary Weekend also offers training for ALL Rotarians.
There will be something for everyone so please mark your calendar so as to not miss it! The agenda will be sent out shortly.
Come to North Bay to learn more about Rotary, reconnect with your friends, make new ones and enjoy great fellowship, food and fun. We look forward to seeing all of you!
Please note: The Best Western is a two-storey facility and does NOT have an elevator. When booking your hotel accommodation, if you have mobility issues, PLEASE make sure you request a first-floor accommodation.

Peace Committee
The purpose of the Peace Committee is to build awareness of peace programs to fulfill Rotary’s mission to empower and enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace. We believe that positive peace embodies the attitudes, structures and institutes that support and sustain a peaceful society. Our members take action by carrying out service projects, supporting peace fellowships and scholarships, and promoting peace building initiatives. Through these actions we address the underlying causes of conflict which include poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. Working together on service projects connects people and creates the potential of opportunities to build community and a sense of belonging and peace.

Last night at our Wednesday Night Talk Show we introduced the Great Ontario Fishing Raffle. This is a District wide lottery that has been spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Barrie.
I am very excited about this initiative, and it is a great opportunity for all clubs to participate in a major lottery with no risk and virtually no investment. It is also a great example of how the District can support our clubs and how clubs can work together.
Marketing and on-line ticket selling will commence on March 1, leading to a draw in May. So, time is of the essence. An information session being held next Wednesday Feb 9th at 6:30. I expect that this will be something all club's will be interested in, and I would encourage every club to have at least one member from their club attend the session.
Here is the link to the meeting.
