Weekly Updates

At our last meeting, our very own Sunriser, Ian Lane, was our vocational speaker.
Interviewed by Steven MacPhail, Ian explained how his vocation was somewhat serendipitous and how his degree in music helped him land his first job.
He provided an overview of what led to his current role as Manager of Research at Health Sciences North Research Institute and how gratifying it feels to help foster research innovation for the north and help researchers obtain research grants that ultimately help improve patient care.

Volunteer Opportunities
Rotarians Ringing Bells: Volunteers Needed for the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Drive

The Salvation Army is hosting its iconic Christmas kettle campaign again this year and they continue to need our support in the ringing of the bells!
If you would like to support this initiative – by doing what Rotarians do best (putting service above self), please sign up to be a Sunriser volunteer at the following link: Google Spreadsheet (click here).

The Salvation Army will be kicking off this year’s event at our morning meeting on Thursday, November 18th by sharing with our club the good work that results from bell ringing campaign.
The Sunriser volunteer shifts will then commence on Friday, November 19th.
Details on available days and times will be shared in the near future, but we encourage you to go ahead and sign up for a specific location so that we can gauge interest and firm up times and dates at each location.
This year’s locations will include:
  • Rehan's Independent
  • Chris' Independent
  • South End Walmart
  • New Sudbury Walmart
  • New Sudbury Mall (tentatively)
If you have any questions, kindly contact the Sunriser Kettle Campaign co-chairs Trevor Gilchrist and Emily Mantle.

MISSION 31    &   NUTRITION FOR THE MISSION

It’s that time of year again!  For the Rotary Club of Sudbury Sunrisers the 31 Days of Christmas becomes MISSION 31!

This year’s mission will include -

  • 31 Days of supporting the Elgin St. Mission with nightly groups of volunteers to dish up and hand out the meals to over 200 hungry people
  • 31 Days of grocery donations for the Elgin St. Mission with Chris’s Independent and the NUTRITION FOR THE MISSION campaign
  • 31 Days to obtain $31,000 in cash and grocery donations. DAY CONSTRUCTION will once again match and donate $31,000

Sign up sheets for both the 31 days of the Elgin St. Mission nights as well as the Nutrition for the Mission grocery bagging will be circulated at Rotary starting this Thursday November 4th!

Elgin St. Mission – From December 1st to December 31st teams of 6-10 people are required to dish the prepared food into Styrofoam containers, hand out the containers to people at the take-out window and wash dishes as well as prepare bags and cutlery for future meals.  Monetary donations are required by the Elgin St. Mission to purchase the perishable items that we are not able to provide through our grocery drive.   To achieve this for our month and to reach our goal of $31,000 we ask that each team donate a minimum of $250 per team.  Any additional donations go a long way to fulfilling our goal of $31,000 and providing support to the increasing number of needy in our community.  Forms will be provided for those people who wish and require a charitable donation receipt.
Sign up will begin at Rotary on Thursday Nov 4th.  If you are not able to attend meetings, please contact Amanda Robichaud a.labrecherobichaud@gmail.com

Nutrition for the Mission - This campaign will launch on Monday December 6th at 3pm at Chris’s Independent on Lorne St.   Due to Covid once again we will be pre bagging grocery donation bags of $10 and $20 value with food required by the Elgin St. Mission.   Monday December 6th to Thursday December 9th we will man the grocery store with teams of 5 to encourage the patrons to purchase one of the available bags.   Stingray Radio will be broadcasting the first 3 days from Chris’s Independent and then support the campaign on air for the remainder of the month.  Chris’s Independent clerks will continue to encourage customers to purchase these available bags until December 31st.

Sunday December 5th evening we will need to fill the grocery bags with groceries.   The remainder of the month there will be additional times required to restock the shelves with the bags.  Last years campaign provided $26,000 of food to the Elgin St. Mission and took us a long way toward that $31,000 goal!   Please contact Barb Roy roy@cyberbeach.net
