A Note from President Shannon:

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

We did show our power in numbers with being the successful recipients of $10,000 with Doyle Dodge- now let's use that to help out the YMCA!

Remember to vote with each link on every device you can get your hands on!

Yours in Rotary,
Shannon

The Nickel Refillery | SEEThe Nickel Refillery - Laurentian Brew
Last week we were pleased to have Liz Anawati from The Nickel Refillery Inc as our guest speaker
Liz spoke to us about the start up of her company and the vision she has for the future
She spoke about how Zero waste shopping might sound intimidating at first, but how easy it is. Not only does it save households from accumulating unnecessary waste, it can also save you money!
You can start with simple things such as bringing your own grocery bags and looking at what you currently use the most of that ends up in the trash (start in one room, like the kitchen) and look for alternative, reusable options instead. They offer education and have friendly, knowledgeable team members who love to share information about how to get started
The Nickel Refillery is located at:

More District News:
We are currently promoting the excellent Water First project this year as a district Indigenous Program.  I would like to continue our emphasis on Indigenous programing for 2022.23 in a similar manner to promote an Indigenous museum that is supported by HIP - Honouring Indigenous People.  It is being built in Gravenhurst.
Our Gravenhurst Rotary club will take the lead as well as backing by our Indigenous Chair, Nicole Van Stone. In Rotary and Peace
Richard Denton DGE

Here is Nicole's letter:
You’re invited to learn about the Indigenous project Misko-Aki:
Confluence of Cultures.
A unique Canadian exhibit opening in 2023 at the Muskoka Discovery Centre in Gravenhurst Ontario.

Please join us November 3rd from 4pm- 5pm on Zoom.

The Misko-Aki: Confluence of Cultures is an unprecedented project with significant potential benefits to visitors and viewers within Muskoka and beyond. While based on Indigenous stories about Muskoka dating back 13,000 years, the exhibit will be relevant to the rest of Canada as their ways of living are woven into the entire fabric of the country. The partnership arrangement with the Creative Indigenous group will ensure authenticity and provide insight into Indigenous culture(s) through Indigenous eyes which can only increase the level of understanding and contribute to the process of Truth and Reconciliation.

Please see the poster attached and register below to receive the Zoom link to our presentation'

Our speakers will include:

  •  Project Director Waha:tsa Tim Johnson of the Mohawk Nation’s Wolf clan. He has 10 years of experience working with the Smithsonian Institute and led the development of the American Indian Exhibit in Washington and New York.
  • Chief Ted Williams of the Chipewas of Rama First Nation. As an Indigenous leader with interests in personal development, he is dedicated to helping his community, and individuals, become “all that we can be”!
  • Karihwakeron “Tim” Thompson of the Mohawk Nation's Bear clan at Wahta Mohawk Territory. He is a HIP Board member and named as one of twelve defenders of human rights in the “Speak Truth to Power” initiative.
Hope to see you there.

Miigwech,
Nicole
