Last meeting
At last week's Rotary meeting, the Honorable Anthony Rota was our guest speaker. On December 5, 2019, the Honourable Anthony Rota was elected as the 37th Speaker of the House of Commons for the 43rd Parliament.

On April 20, 2020, he was also appointed Chair of the Special Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic (COVI). The Special Committee was established to examine the government response to the pandemic and includes all Members of the House of Commons.

Mr. Rota, Member for the electoral district of Nipissing—Timiskaming, was first elected in 2004, and served in the 38th Parliament as Chair of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the Standing Committee on National Defence.

The Honorable Anthony Rota provided Sunrisers with an overview of the role and responsibilities of the Speaker of the House of Commons which include presiding over deliberations, enforcing standing orders and as Chief Administrator, ensuring that all members from all parties have what they need to fulfill their duties. He also explained the important diplomatic role of the Speaker, travelling abroad to meet or hosting other Speakers and Ambassadors etc.

Program Updates

The Plasma Drive needs your help to reach the donation goal! Please contact Brandi Braithwaite to sign up for a time to donate.

On June 20th Sunrisers will be working with Dr. Peter Beckett to plant milkweed in the Pollination Garden at Rotary Park.

As we prepare for the upcoming year, we are sending out the dues invoice. What the year will look like is somewhat uncertain however hopeful that by fall we will be returning to guidelines that are more similar to pre-pandemic.

We do ask for prompt feedback with the invoices, as any members who appear on our roster July 1st we do have to pay fees to Rotary International.  If you do not plan on returning as a member, I would ask you please let me know.  As always, we are interested in feedback from members that have decided to move on to other commitments.

Sincerely,
Shannon Kenrick-Rochon

Rotary News

More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population.

OUR IMPACT ON EDUCATION

The Rotary Foundation supports education through scholarships, donations, and service projects around the world.

Rotary members make amazing things happen, like:

Opening schools: In Afghanistan, Rotary members opened a girls’ school to break the cycle of poverty and social imbalance.

Teaching adults to read: Rotary members in the United States partnered with ProLiteracy Detroit to recruit and train tutors after a study showed that more than half of the local adult population was functionally illiterate.

New teaching methods: The SOUNS program in South Africa, Puerto Rico and the United States teaches educators how to improve literacy by teaching children to recognize letters by sounds instead of names.

Making schools healthy: Rotarians are providing clean, fresh water to every public school in Lebanon so students can be healthier and get a better education.

Enhancing educational systems: In Kenya, Rotary clubs are working with the Global Partnership for Education and local and national governments to advance life-long learning opportunities for poor and marginalized children.

When you teach somebody how to read, they have that for a lifetime. It ripples through the community, one by one.
